Audience resonance: the metric most writers ignore

Resonance is the gap between 'a smart person could follow this' and 'this person will feel seen by it.' Closing it is the highest-leverage editing move there is.

What resonance actually is

Resonance is the felt sense that the writer understood the specific moment the reader is in. It's produced by precise language about that moment — not by sentiment, not by warmth in general.

The 'they would say' test

Read your draft and underline any phrase your reader would never use themselves. Each one is a small distance between you and them. Replace half. Keep the ones doing real explanatory work.

Specificity is the resonance engine

Resonant writing names details only someone inside the situation would name. 'Tuesday standups' beats 'regular meetings.' 'The eleven days of waiting' beats 'the delay.'

Calibrate, don't pander

Resonance is precision about the reader, not flattery of them. Pandering reads as performance; precision reads as respect.
