The body reads first
Before the mind parses the meaning of a sentence, the body registers its rhythm. Short, short, short reads as urgency. Long, qualified, embedded reads as deliberation. Mixed reads as a thinking human at the keyboard.
The variance test
Count the words in every sentence of a paragraph. If the numbers cluster within five of each other, the rhythm is flat. Healthy prose shows a range — a six-word sentence near a twenty-word sentence is a sign of life.
How to fix flat rhythm
Find the longest sentence. Break it. Find the shortest. See if it could absorb a clause from a neighbor. The point isn't shortness — it's variance.
