The variance test
Count the words in every sentence of a paragraph. If they cluster within five of each other, the rhythm is flat. A healthy paragraph shows a range — a six-word sentence near a twenty-word sentence is a sign of life.
How to fix flatness
Find the longest sentence in each paragraph and break it. Find the shortest and see if it can absorb a clause from a neighbor. The point isn't shortness — it's variance.
