AI Draft Refinement

Humanizing an AI draft without losing what was good about it

Throwing out an AI draft is wasteful. The structure is usually fine. The problem is everything between the structural beats.

Pass one: rhythm

Read the draft aloud once. Mark every sentence that feels the same length as the one before it. Break, combine, or fragment until you have visible variation on the page.

Pass two: specificity

Find one vague quantifier per paragraph ('many,' 'often,' 'a number of') and replace it with something specific, even if approximated. 'A few weeks' beats 'some time.' 'Eleven of the thirty' beats 'a significant portion.'

Pass three: commitment

Find every hedged claim and ask whether you actually believe the unhedged version. If you do, lead with it. The hedge can follow, but it can't open the sentence.

What to keep

Keep the structural skeleton. Keep accurate facts. Keep transitions that genuinely advance the argument. The AI did the architectural work. You're doing the human finishing.
