AI assistance multiplies output, but the multiplier acts on whatever standard you started with. Build the standard first.

Decide what AI is for, and what it is not for
AI is excellent for structure, first drafts of routine content, and reformatting. It is weaker for genuinely original argument, for sensitive interpersonal communication, and for anything where you would be embarrassed to be quoted from the unedited output. Name the boundary explicitly before scaling the use.

Standardise the brief
Most of the variance in AI output comes from variance in the brief. A short template — audience, goal, length, tone, must-preserve, must-avoid — turns inconsistent prompts into reliable ones. The template lives wherever the team writes, not in a doc no one opens.

Separate drafting from editing in time
Produce drafts in batches. Edit in a separate session, ideally after a break. The drafting mode and the editing mode use different attention; mixing them slows both. Most writers who feel slow with AI are mixing them.

Build a personal 'never' list and apply it ruthlessly
Five to ten phrases or moves that mark unedited AI text. 'Leverage,' 'unlock,' 'in today's,' 'it's worth noting,' 'a powerful tool.' On every draft, search for these and replace them. The list takes ten minutes to make and pays back forever.

Read aloud before publishing anything you sign
The single most reliable quality gate. If a sentence is hard to say, it is harder to read. Reading aloud catches rhythm problems, hedge accumulation, and the subtle drift away from your voice in ways silent re-reading does not.

Context-dependent. For editorial work, an honest policy on the site is usually sufficient. For ghostwriting and certain creative contexts, norms still vary.
