AI Content Policy (search)

The set of guidelines that search engines use to evaluate AI-assisted content for ranking purposes.

Definition

An AI content policy, in the search context, refers to how a search engine treats text produced with the help of AI models. As of the mid-2020s, the major engines — Google in particular — have stated that AI-assisted content is allowed when it is genuinely helpful, demonstrates expertise, and serves a real user need. What is penalised is content created at scale primarily to manipulate rankings, regardless of whether a human or a model produced it.

Why it matters

The practical implication for content teams is that the relevant question is no longer 'should we use AI?' but 'is the result something a reader would value?' Pages assembled from generic AI output, with no original perspective and no concrete expertise, are at risk regardless of how they were produced. Pages that use AI to handle structure or first drafts while a human supplies judgement, examples, and verification are not. For publishers seeking AdSense approval or sustained organic traffic, the policy environment rewards the same things readers already reward: depth, accuracy, and clear authorship.

Examples

Likely penalised

A site of 4,000 thin AI-generated pages targeting long-tail keywords with no original analysis.

Generally fine

A 1,200-word explainer where AI helped draft the structure and the author added expert commentary, original examples, and verified citations.

Frequently asked

Does Google penalise AI-written articles?

Not for being AI-written. Pages that are low-value, derivative, or produced at scale to manipulate rankings can be penalised regardless of authorship.

Do I need to disclose AI assistance?

No general legal requirement, but a growing expectation in editorial contexts. Many publishers now disclose to maintain reader trust.

Will AI detection scores affect ranking?

There is no public evidence that search engines use third-party detector scores. Content quality remains the operative signal.
